Solar lights and other solar home products are, indeed, environmentally friendly. But you do not need to consider yourself an environmentalist to realize the benefits of using solar powered products.

What are some other benefits of solar powered home products? Well, when you use solar home items, your electricity bills will go down. Why pay outrageous prices for electricity when you can create your own electricity at home?

Another, less-thought-of benefit is the lack of wiring. If you buy solar lights to light up a garden path or if you have solar powered water features, you do not have to worry about installing any wiring. Also, solar garden lights usually have darkness sensors, so you never even have to worry about turning them on or off. Pretty much, you can pull your solar lights out of the box, place them where you want them, and then never worry about them again.

Let us again go over the benefits of solar energy:

· It is environmentally friendly. Solar energy is clean and renewable. It does not pollute (traditional forms of electrical generation do).

· Solar energy systems require very little maintenance. You do not have to worry about recurring costs or adding extra fuel, etc.

· When you use solar energy in your home, you will save money in the long run. After all, energy from the sun is free once you have purchased your solar panels or solar lights, etc. There are even some financial incentives from the government that can reduce your cost. And if you do not use as much energy as your solar system uses, you can sell that extra energy to your utility company. When you use solar energy, you are no longer affected by the supply and demand of regular fuel.

· Power outages will not affect you if you have a full solar system in your home. When you use solar energy, you lessen your dependence on both centralized and foreign sources of energy.

· Many solar systems (especially outdoor solar lights and outdoor solar water features, etc.) are very easy to install and require no wiring.

Of course, there are some disadvantages to having a solar home. Namely, a solar energy system can be expensive (but remember, after even a relatively short time of use, it can pay for itself). Also, depending on where your home is located in relation to the sun and how large of an area you have to install solar panels, solar power pay not work as well for you and your home.

There are many different solar home devices that you can buy. You may want to consider buying a solar powered car ventilator, solar flashlights, solar video cameras, solar pool purifiers, solar heaters, solar mosquito inhibitors, solar radios, solar powered fountain pumps, solar lighting, etc.

Solar power is simply the conversion of light energy into electrical energy using devices attached with special materials like silicon.

Man has been late in harnessing the light energy from the radiant sun, a repository of unfathomable power. But nature has been using it for millions of years. Each of leaf of shrub, herb, or tree is a form of solar cell, producing energy for them to grow. This energy production is completed through a chemical process known as photosynthesis. This is the best example of free solar energy.

Then there are real solar panels that one can get almost free. One can get such free solar panels just for asking, for many institutions want to get rid of slightly degraded ones that can be used in households for free. Even though the panels are slightly degraded, these would work fine. Moreover, photovoltaic (PV) panels are not the only type of solar energy.

Solar heating can be set up with glass, cardboard, or wood and insulation. Free glass is available everywhere in the U.S. These can be used to make solar ovens, solar hot water heaters, and hot air heaters.

To build a solar oven costs only $9, which includes $5 for clamps and $4 for the black paint. This is a rugged way of enjoying free solar panel power. One can enjoy rebates and discounts being offered by companies selling solar products. Ordering items in bulk and allying with friends and partners would further reduce costs.

One has to tap all ideas to get the best use at cheapest price. The very idea of solar energy is to utilize the sun’s energy, which is available for free.

The Sun, worshiped by Pharos and kings, mentioned in almost all the Religious scriptures, symbolizes the beginning of all known energies that ever existed. Man kind was marveled of its magnificent appearance and power to effect almost all the climate changes in this world and built temples to worship the sun gods.

Though mankind gave away the gods that they believed in the past, they indeed still respect the sun as the source of aboundent energy. Modern day science has calculated that the sun unleashes a staggering one thousand watts of energy to a square meter of the Earth’s surface every second. That is enough energy of keep your iron on for one hour or lighting up a blub for 25 hours. Although the sun releases energy in such quantities mankind is still able harness a fraction of it.

In the modern days mankind has harnessed solar energy through the use of solar panels. Although the technology used to turn sunlight into electricity is still in its infancy stages, scientist are working hard to introduce more new and better technologies to harness the sun. One day we can be hopeful enough to go and buy a solar panel that will be reliable to support large household.

The Solar panel is made up of photovoltaic (PV) arrays. The word photovoltaic is a combination of the two words photo which refers to light and voltaic which refers to electricity. These photovoltaic modules are assembled to make up a photovoltaic cell also known as solar cell. These cells are installed and interconnected in a panel to create a photovoltaic array also known as a solar panel.

The photovoltaic (PV) cells are made out of material used in semiconductors (Crystalline silicon and gallium arsenide are the best substance currently in use). When light strikes these substances a portion of the energy that is with the light is absorbed, as result electrons the basic building blocks of electricity are released allowing them to flow freely. These electrons are directed in to single direction to obtain the necessary current. This current, together with the voltage defines the power that the solar panel can produce.

The main problem associated with the solar panel is its cost; with a PV panel costs ranging from $1 to $2 per watt companies are finding it difficult to produce viable solar panels for the market. Consumers on the other hand opt for budget solar cells, which provide lower output levels resulting in consumer disappointment.

Despite all of this disadvantages if you are interested in installing and using solar panels follow these steps.

First consider and have clear idea on what would you want to power up using a solar panel. There is a verity of smaller spot lights that could lighten your backyard. You can also invest on smaller solar panels that could be used to lighten up your garage lights or any remote place where it is difficult to provide electricity. Remember a solar panel is equal to a mobile power source. Unlike generators solar panels doesn’t pollute the environment when it’s active. With a little maintenance you will be able to sustain a good flow of power.

When purchasing the solar panel make sure that you purchase the “Plug & Play” type. This will reduce the hassle of having to read lengthy user manuals. Most of the solar panels arrive with all necessary connectors and controller and cost around $200 to $ 300, so that you can get on business right away. Be sure that the panel is capable of charging even during overcast days, so you can have power at any time of the year. Having the solar panel it is very important to select a suitable spot to install it. Most of the solar panels take about five to six hours to get fully charged, so it is important to expose much of the surface of the panel to the sun.

Always be prepared to obtain an expert advice if you feel that you are ready to invest on more solar panels. They can help you to get the best solar panels that will suite your requirements.

Such trends towards implementing small solar panels to produce power can make the once “green dream” a reality.

Turn on any television or log onto any news website on the internet and you are bound to hear about global warming and alternative energy sources. Alternative energy is currently developing at a rapid pace and one of the biggest and most popular forms is solar power. So what is solar power?

Solar power is a method of taking the power of the sun and transforming it into energy. Mother nature has been using solar power for millions of years to heat and power the earth reliably and effectively. This natural solar energy can be transformed into cleanly produced electricity or heat for use by anyone anywhere. So how is solar power being utilized around the globe?

Common Solar Power Methods

Photovoltaic Solar Energy: This method involves the use of special solar panels that absorb the sunlight and though a series of events produce electricity for your home, car or office building. It is by far the most popular form of solar power in use today and will continue to be developed and implemented around the globe.

Indirect Solar Heating: Many new homes and office buildings are being designed with indirect solar heating in mind. With this method the rays from the sun are magnified through special windows that transfer and hold in the heat. This method basically mimics the way the earth is heated and it is a very efficient and popular method to reduce the cost of energy bills.

Solar Powered Turbines: A newer method of solar power generation is the solar turbine. With this method a liquid is heated with solar energy and the steam will spin a turbine that produces electricity. Although relatively new this method does show promise in certain areas of the world.

With rising energy prices and the threat of environmental damage from fossil fuels alternative energy is the wave of the future. As science and private industry invest more time and money into research the possibility of mainstream solar power is a real possibility.

Many of us know that solar energy is good, but few really
understand why.

Therefore, I compiled a comprehensive list of solar energy
advantages and disadvantages that will enable you to make an
educated decision whether on not Solar Power is right for YOU.
Solar Energy Advantages

1. Saves you money

After the initial investment has been recovered, the
energy from the sun is practically FREE.

The recovery/
payback period for this investment can be very short depending
on how much electricity your household uses.

Financial
incentives are available form the government that will reduce
your cost.

If your system produce more energy than you
use, your utility company can buy it from you, building up a
credit on your account! This is called net metering.

It
will save you money on your electricity bill if you have one at
all.

Solar energy does not require any fuel.

It’s not affected by the supply and demand of fuel and is
therefore not subjected to the ever-increasing price of
gasoline.

The savings are immediate and for many years
to come.

The use of solar energy indirectly reduces
health costs.

2. Environmentally friendly

Solar Energy is clean, renewable (unlike gas, oil and
coal) and sustainable, helping to protect our environment.

It does not pollute our air by releasing carbon dioxide,
nitrogen oxide, sulphur dioxide or mercury into the atmosphere
like many traditional forms of electrical generations does.

Therefore Solar Energy does not contribute to global
warming, acid rain or smog.

It actively contributes to
the decrease of harmful green house gas emissions.

It’s
generated where it is needed.

By not using any fuel,
Solar Energy does not contribute to the cost and problems of the
recovery and transportation of fuel or the storage of
radioactive waste.

3. Independent/ semi-independent

Solar Energy can be utilized to offset utility-supplied
energy consumption. It does not only reduce your electricity
bill, but will also continue to supply your home/ business with
electricity in the event of a power outage.

A Solar
Energy system can operate entirely independent, not requiring a
connection to a power or gas grid at all. Systems can therefore
be installed in remote locations (like holiday log cabins),
making it more practical and cost-effective than the supply of
utility electricity to a new site.

The use of Solar
Energy reduces our dependence on foreign and/or centralized
sources of energy, influenced by natural disasters or
international events and so contributes to a sustainable
future.

Solar Energy supports local job and wealth
creation, fuelling local economies.

4. Low/ no maintenance

Solar Energy systems are virtually maintenance free and
will last for decades.

Once installed, there are no
recurring costs.

They operate silently, have no moving
parts, do not release offensive smells and do not require you to
add any fuel.

More solar panels can easily be added in
the future when your family’s needs grow.

Solar Energy Disadvantages

The initial cost is the main disadvantage of installing
a solar energy system, largely because of the high cost of the
semi-conducting materials used in building one.

The
cost of solar energy is also high compared to non-renewable
utility-supplied electricity. As energy shortages are becoming
more common, solar energy is becoming more
price-competitive.

Solar panels require quite a large
area for installation to achieve a good level of
efficiency.

The efficiency of the system also relies on
the location of the sun, although this problem can be overcome
with the installation of certain components.

The
production of solar energy is influenced by the presence of
clouds or pollution in the air.

Similarly, no solar
energy will be produced during nighttime although a battery
backup system and/or net metering will solve this problem. See
www.dsireusa.org for details on how net metering allows you to
save electricity and money.

As far as solar powered
cars go – their slower speed might not appeal to everyone caught
up in today’s rat race.

How Photovoltaic Solar Energy Works – A Guide

 By: James Redder

You are reading this article because you are interested in how photovoltaic solar energy works right? That would also mean you are interested in a clean, cheap reliable source of energy that is also renewable? Once the mystique is removed from discovering the process of how does photovoltaic solar energy work people will began to see the usefulness of it. Scientist and those in the private sector are even now looking for ways to make using solar energy in homes and businesses more economically feasible. And it is this type of work that how photovoltaic solar energy works such an ever increasing subject of importance.

How Does It Work?

The first step when discovering the process of how does photovoltaic solar energy work is the gathering of solar power. Once this has been done and collected through the photovoltaic cells they convert that energy obtained from the sun DIRECTLY into electricity. This electricity produced is in Direct Current or (DC) format. This (DC) can then be stored directly into storage batteries. After this (DC) is converted to Alternating Current (AC) it can be used to operate lights and any other common appliance.

Another way that is properly thought of when considering the choice of using solar energy is the following: If you can imagine that it works much the same way that leaving your garden hose laying in the sun all day on a hot sunny day. When you go to use it the first thing that comes out is hot water having been heated by the sun all day. This heated water can be used in the same manner that you would use heated water that was produced through other means. The only difference is in the way it was produced.

As you can see there are at least two very different ways of utilizing solar power. As the technology is developed further you can fully expect other ways of using it.

Conclusion

Now it’s time to start putting these ideas into good practical use. But first one must consider the geographical implications of using solar power. If you think about it there are locations that get more sun then average and locations that get less sun on average. Understanding how solar power is utilized you can see that there may be some places that are not suited for it. In fact after reading this article and now understanding how photovoltaic solar energy works you should be able to gauge if a particular location is suitable or not suitable for this alternative energy.

Solar panels convert the energy from the sun into electricity that can be used to heat your home or water. Currently the technology isn’t available to completely power a home with solar panels. Solar panels just don’t capture enough energy from the sun to be able to completely power a home or business.

Solar panels are usually installed on a rooftop and collect energy from the sun. In the northern hemisphere the south side of a home hasthe most sunlight during the daytime. For this reason it is best if the solar panels are installed on the south facing portion of a roof.

A disadvantage of solar panels is their appearance. They are typically rather large and don’t look very pretty. Although they have improved over the past 25 years or so. You can buy solar panels at retail home improvement stores and online.

An advantage of solar panels is you will conserve energy and help preserve the environment by using the renewable energy of the sun. Also there is currently tax credit available for installing solar panels. You will need to have a professional installer do the installation though to get the tax credits. A tax credit is better than a tax deduction because the tax credit reduces your total tax burden by the amount of the credit and a deduction just reduces your taxable income.

Advanced Vehicles

When we think of advanced vehicles it reminds us of speed that a vehicle has and all the newer vehicles that are coming out with all the modern gadgets and gizmos. Every time we turn the ignition on our vehicle we are sending a bad sign out into the world and the atmosphere. Scientist have worked rather hard at coming up with a way that our cars can be safe for our planet. So how is that done?

Advanced fuel systems include energy storage which is the batteries that help power it instead of the fuels, power electronics, thermal comfort and systems analysis. These fuel systems are constantly being studied and have made outstanding research and development topics. The main focus on the fuel systems in advanced vehicles is to find an alternative fuel in order to cut down on pollution and to restore our economy. We cannot continue buying fuels forever. We need an alternative to fuel. Sometime in the future, fuel will no longer be available for us to use. Advanced vehicles are designed to make it more efficient to run at top speeds. Convenience is another advantage to the advanced vehicles.

They plug in and charge instead of running out of fuel and refilling the tank. Running these cars may not break any records but it can help tremendously knowing that they are running clean. Ultracapacitors are designed to provide additional power to accelerate for climbing hills. Vehicle power electronics controls the amount of electricity through the devices. This may be the ignition, DC to DC converters, inverters, and motor controllers.

Vehicle Thermal comfort is how you control your temperature inside the car. You may have to roll the windows down or put them up. Turn the heat on or the air conditioning on. No matter what you have to do this is thermal comfort. The main goal for such an invention is to come up with a vehicle that can get us where we need to go in the amount of time that we allow ourselves. In the fast paced world that we live in today, it is hard to find someone who has the time to spend waiting on their vehicles to get repaired or refueled. That is because we need that vehicle to be up and running when we need it the most. Scientist are studying the car factor and what it will do for us in the future and what it has done for us in the past. As they strive to gather more information they can better the way the advanced vehicles have made it through.

Advanced vehicles are on the go and will one day be the car that we decide to buy because that may be our only choice in the future. When the fuels run dry we will no longer be able to drive what we currently have now. Though these vehicles do allow some restriction, that will no longer be as we progress into the future and all the bugs will be worked out.

Solar Power Homes

Have you ever noticed homes that have huge tinted windows in them as you drive by? You may wonder why someone would want such tall windows in their home. There is a reason for that and it is because of they are using solar power to heat their homes and to provide the energy they need to power it. Any home can be built to use solar power with just a few minor alteration to make and you too can build a solar power house that will save you a lot of money in the future as you use solar power to heat your home, pump and heat your water and also to provide energy to your home to power your appliances and lights in your home naturally and effectively without a monthly bill

There are just a few suggestions when building your solar power home. It depends on where you live as to which side of the house you should put the most windows on. For the most part is more common to assume that the sun rises more toward the south side of your home. This is the side where you want to have the most windows in your home. That way you are allowing the sun to shine through and warm your home naturally. You also need to make sure that there are no trees that are directly close to the house that may prevent the sun from shining directly into the home. Don’t use dark colors in your home to decorate with. Instead use bright and light colors that will attract the heat more evenly and benefits you more.

Adding a solar source outside where you can use a solar power designed box to attract the heat from the sun can be transformed into energy to power your home and warm your water. The products that it takes to get this accomplished will cost a little more than if you built a standard home without using solar power. The good thing about solar power is that it is an initial investment.

Overtime when you totally rely on the sun to heat your home and all the other functions it can perform you will not have a monthly bill because you don’t pay for the sun every month like you do with other power sources. Use ceiling fans to reduce the amount of time you may need to run your air conditioner. Ceiling fans can produce a more even amount of heat and air without having hot and cold pockets throughout the home. Use metal insulated doors that will keep out the cold and bring in the heat. Keep the doors closed during the time of day that the sun is shining in on that side of your home in order to save the heat inside your home longer.

Owning a solar power home means that you are encouraging preserving our natural resources for the future. It also means that you will not worry with the increase in cost of electricity and gas because you are using the best source out there without hurting the environment.

Passive Solar Power

It is a well known fact that the sun is the strongest from the south. People who want to conserve solar power uses this theory in order to get the most sun into their houses with minimal expense. If you are building a home that you want to be solar power, it is best to put the most windows facing the south side. Although it is not always true, depending on where you live, it is a general rule to go by. Passive technology turns sunlight into heat that can be used for several things, including ventilation and cooling. You can heat homes and businesses with passive solar. Passive solar systems depend on gravity fed and natural resources in order to make passive solar work. If it uses a pump or fan to force the liquid through, than it is an active solar.

Passive solar technology offers direct and indirect gain for heating spaces, water heating systems, use of thermal mass and also phase change materials which helps to regulate the temperature indoors. There is also the solar cooking equipment, the solar chimney which allows for ventilation and earth sheltering. Passive solar can also be found in a solar furnace and solar forge, although these are a little more complicated. Sun rooms are another example of passive solar power as it lets the sun come into the room without allowing it to escape. There is no mechanism or no engine to power just the clear panes of glass attracting the sun and trapping it within.

Solar gain is referring to the increase in temperature in an area, an object or a structure that is a result of solar radiation. The stronger the sun the more solar gain you have. A solar furnace is any huge object that is created in order to channel the heat directly to one place. The heat can be unbearable but it does produce a lot of electricity from it. Temperatures can reach up to 3,000 degrees. When you compare the expenses associated with passive solar you realize that the cost of passive solar is minimal when you compare it to active wear.

Because there is no mechanism to power it makes it more affordable. With active solar you must have a device that can power the heat that you take in and used it. Passive solar is the most popular with those who are experimenting with the conception of solar power and may find that they like it enough to stick to it. When you are ready for an upgrade it is easy to move up to active power. Adding a mechanism that will easily and conveniently pump the water on through the source is an effective way of combining today’s technology with conservation and preservation that we have access to.

Passive solar power is something that we will be seeing a lot of in the future as the need for solar power becomes more in demand. There will come a time when even those who depend on active solar may have to switch to passive solar.
